Frequently Asked Questions

What is Online Allergies?

What is Online Allergies?

Online Allergies is a free site that gives friends and family the power to share their allergy lists with anyone they choose to help prevent a medical emergency.

How much does Online Allergies cost to use?

Nothing. Creating an account and using the site is free.

Where can I learn more about the site and see an example of an Online Allergies Profile?

Click ABOUT US in the footer for a basic outline of the site and to view a sample profile.

I don't have any allergies. Why should I sign up?

You probably have friends or family members who have allergies. Having your own account lets them share their profile with you, so you can access their allergy information in case of an emergency.

Creating and using an account

How do I sign up?

From the home page, click CREATE FREE ACCOUNT and follow the onscreen prompts.

How old do I have to be to create an account?

You must be at least 18 years old to create an account. Online Allergies profiles contain health related information, and we take children's privacy very seriously. If you are under 18, your parent or legal guardian may create a profile for you on their account.

Why do you ask for my blood type, diet, and my asthma history in the sign up process?

This information is not required to create an account, but in an emergency situation, this information could be helpful to your friends, family, or emergency responders.

Why isn't gluten-free a choice under 'diet' when I sign up for an account?

The reasons for having a gluten-free diet vary. Wheat allergies, celiac disease, and life-style choices are all potential reasons why a person's diet is gluten-free. Therefore we recommend our users describe their specific issues on their allergy profile under the FOOD category.

How do I add, edit, or change my allergy list?

Just click the UPDATE buttons on the appropriate category you wish to change.

I have several allergies I want to list. Is there a limit on how many I can add?

There is no limit. However, we do encourage our users to be as concise and specific as possible, so their allergy lists can easily be read and understood in an emergency situation.

Do I have to fill out every field in the allergy list?

The only required fields are Allergens and Severity. The Symptoms and Notes/History fields are optional. You should only enter as much information as you're comfortable sharing. Remember, this list will only be as useful as the information you provide.

My photo won't upload. What should I do?

Make sure your photo is in JPEG format, and not a thumbnail. If you're still having problems, please try another photo. Be sure your web browser is up to date and that you have installed the latest version of Adobe Flash player. Please note that not all mobile devices support photo upload.

How do I change my photo or stats once I've created an account?

Simply click the UPDATE button on the left side of your screen beneath your name and photograph.

What's an Al-Pal?

An Al-Pal is someone you choose to share your allergies with.

How do I share my allergy profile with my friends and family?

Once you've created an account, you can search for users by name, using the MEMBER SEARCH/SHARE bar at the top. If you can't find the person you're looking for, the site will prompt you to send them an invitation to join the site. Once they join, you will be able to send them an Al-Pal request.

When I search or make Al-Pal requests, I see the words "managed by" next to some profiles and not others. What does this mean?

In an effort to make our users fully aware of who they are sharing their allergy profiles with, we identify members whose profiles are "managed by" others. For example, a parent has created a profile for their child, so the parent is identified as the profile manager.

How do I delete my online allergies account?

You can delete your entire Online Allergies account at any time. Select and display the primary account holder's profile, then click the DELETE DISPLAYED PROFILE button below the allergy list. Please note that all family member profiles tied to this account will also be deleted.

Managing your family's allergies

How do I add my children or other family members to my Online Allergies Account?

You can add additional family members at any time. Just click the ADD FAMILY MEMBER button on your profile page located beneath your allergy list.

I am a divorced parent. How should my ex and I manage our child's allergy profile?

To avoid redundancy, it is highly recommended that only one parent create your child's profile. The parent who most often takes the child to the doctor might be best suited to create and manage the profile.

Why can't I share all of my family member's allergy profiles at one time?

In the interest of giving our users total control of their profiles, each request must be made individually. For example, you might want to share your allergy profile with your boss, but you don't want your boss to see your child's allergy profile.

How do I remove a family member's profile I control on my account?

Select and display the family member's profile you wish to delete. Then click the DELETE DISPLAYED PROFILE button below their allergy list.

I've just turned 18, and I'd like to separate my allergy profile from my parent's account so I can manage it myself. What should I do?

We encourage users when they are no longer dependent on their parent(s) to create their own account, and update it with their latest allergy information. To avoid redundancy, please have your parent/guardian delete your allergy profile on their account before creating your own.

How do I delete a deceased user's account?

You may request an account be removed from the site by emailing us at [email protected]. For security purposes, we cannot provide login or password information for the account to anyone. Please provide as many details as possible to help us remove the appropriate account, for instance, your relationship to the deceased, their profile name as displayed, and the account manager, if any.

Protecting your profile

Who should I share my allergy profile with?

Do not share your allergy profile with anyone you don't know. You should only share your allergies with people you know and trust.

Is my profile information kept private?

Protecting our users privacy is our top priority. Keeping your allergy information secure is a team effort between our users and us. We depend on our users to keep their login and passwords safe and encourage them to be mindful of whom they share their allergy lists with.

Why do I have to log in every time? Why is there no automatic log in option?

We take your security and the protection of your allergy information seriously. We know this might be inconvenient, but we hope our users agree that this is one more way to protect their information.

Why would an Online Allergies account be disabled?

Accounts are disabled for Terms of Use violations or inappropriate user conduct.

I've noticed that my name and picture appear on a profile that I did not create. What should I do?

Please email us at [email protected] with as many details as you can provide, such as the profile name and account manager (if any), so we can investigate the profile in question.

How do I access my privacy settings?

To access your privacy settings, click UPDATE under the statistics column on the left hand side of the primary account holder's profile.

Is there an Online Allergies mobile app available?

Not just yet, but it's in the works.
